The Good News: There are many concerned citizens, both individual and corporate, that are making a difference in combating plastic pollution.
Here are Three Outstanding Brands and Trademarks that are making a difference:
1. PARLEY® FOR THE OCEANS®
PARLEY is collaborating with ADIDAS® on a line of footwear and sportswear that are composed of recycled ocean plastic.

2. RAINFOREST ALLIANCE®
"The Rainforest Alliance is a non-governmental organization working to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior."

In a recent L.A. Times article on "eco-friendly flowers", the Rainforest Alliance is quoted as stating that there are "more than 1.3 million farms (from 78 nations that) use methods it designed to protect ecosystems, workers and local communities.
3. SURFRIDER FOUNDATION®
"The Surfrider Foundation USA is a U.S. 501 grassroots non-profit environmental organization that works to protect and preserve the world's oceans, waves and beaches."

One of the Surfrider Foundation's more recent initiatives includes the planning, implementation and registration of a certification mark grading restaurants that are eco-friendly and sustainable, namely, "Ocean Friendly Restaurant" in stylized format (as follows):
(as published by the USPTO) |
note: The application on file at the USPTO includes the following statement: "The certification mark, as used or intended to be used by authorized persons, is intended to certify that the restaurants using this mark meet certain standards relating to environmental conservation and sustainability."
=====
There is an encouraging groundswell of positive action globally and locally to address and remove the negative impact of plastic pollution. The above three referenced companies are very good examples.
Additionally, there is one particular grass roots campaign that is worthy of mention and which started in Costa Rica and which has had a global impact, namely, @5MinuteBeachCleanup.

Their Instagram account is a testament to this simple mission statement that we each have 5 minutes that we can spare while at the beach to remove plastic pollution. People from all over the world are posting photographs of #beachtrash that they have collected. This is certainly one of the most positive and profound campaigns to combat plastic pollution on planet earth!
