#Ignite22 2018: Sustainable Brands
Dateline: Thursday, April 12, 2018, San Pedro, Calif., on the occasion of the 2nd annual #Ignite22 Sustainable Tech Conference.
Below are some of the Sustainable Brands featured:
I. Addressing Food Insecurity
• ASPIRE Food Group - raises food-grade crickets, a valuable source of protein, on a commercial scale.
• Tiny Farms - "Tiny Farms is an agricultural technology company working to harness the natural efficiency of earth's most efficient livestock - insects." (source: www.tiny-farms.com).
• Pasturebird - raising chickens while implementing regenerative farming methods. "Pastured Poultry = chickens that live outside in a natural habitat (on grass, in the fesh air and shunshine with plenty of space to roam and forage). By rotating the chickens to fresh pasture every single day, Pasturebird chicken is not only healthy and delicious but also goes beyond sustainability to rebuild healthy, regenerative soils and grasslands." (Source: www.pasturebird.com).
II. Harnessing Renewable Energy
• TerViva™ - "... grows a hardy orchard crop called pongamia. We restore productivity to idle agricultural land while generating clean energy, supporting local food production, and restoring environmental health." (source: www.terviva.com).
• CalWave - harnesses the renewable power of ocean waves to product electricity and freshwater.
• eWind - "eWind is developing a cost-effective airborne wind energy system (AWES) - a wind energy generation system that uses flying drones to access more consistent, reliable winds at higher altitudes than those reached by traditional wind turbines. The drones fly within the wind, pull on a tether, and turn a generator on the ground to produce electricity." (source: www.ewindsolutions.com).
III. Other Sustainable Brands
• MOXIE - a NASA Mars Project to produce oxygen from the carbon-dioxide (CO2) gas in the Martian atmosphere (source: www.mars.nasa.gov).
• PingThings - a venture-backed software company that utilizes big-data softward and data science techniques to the utility industry (source: https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/pingthings)
• FREDsense Technologies - water quality assessment technology. FRED stands for "Field Ready Electrochemical Detector).
• AQUAM - cost effective wastewater treatment.
• Marine BioEnergy - advocates open ocean kelp farms. This is a very exciting concept that should be widely adopted throughout the world because kelp is one of the most important factors in removing carbon dioxide (CO2) in our atmosphere. Kelp is also said to be a carbon-neutral energy source and is also reportedly being used in livestock feed blends for cows which reduces their methane production significantly. (x-ref: https://spectrum.ieee.org/energywise/energy/renewables/robotic-kelp-farms-promise-an-ocean-full-of-carbon-neutral-low-cost-energy and http://www.thatsfarming.com/news/kelp-benefits-livestock).
=====
There are many solutions to addressing and lowering the current dangerous level of CO2 gas in Earth's atmosphere. This conference highlighted many sustainable brands and business models that if implemented can lead to a drawing down of said CO2. Drilling for oil on land and on the ocean is not the solution. Indeed, the use of fossil fuel as an energy source needs to be reduced significantly and the quicker the better.
p.s. And here is some additional Good News in an article published today, April 12, 2018, with respect to algae-forestry and bio-energy with carbon capture being combined to remove carbon dioxide from Earth's atmosphere - https://phys.org/news/2018-04-algae-forestry-bioenergy-co2-thin-air.html

#Hershey + #Sustainable = #WhoKnew?
![]() |
| Google Image Search Result; Hershey's is a trademark of the Hershey Company |
Dateline: Wed., April 4, 2018, the Los Angeles Times reports via Bloomberg that "Hershey goes for cocoa sustainability". Which is GREAT NEWS, indeed!
Here is what this means...
First off, Hershey Chocolate & Confectionary Corporation (aka, Hershey) is a HUGE company and the fact that they have adopted and are going to continue to adopt #sustainable policies is an excellent example of good corporate and brand citizenship. Just this example is going to lead to other large companies undertaking similar measures.
In terms of this recent article, Hershey has established a program called "Cocoa for Good" which "will invest (the) funds though 2030 to support four key areas: nourishing children, empowering youth, building prosperous communities and preserving natural ecosystems." Goals include eliminating child labor and increasing shade-grown cocoa.
Doesn't this just make you want to go out and buy a Hershey bar!?...
HERSHEY'S® is, of course, a world famous trademark. It is the trademarks that protect this brand name from being copied or misused by others.

CONCLUSION:
Just because a business is #sustainable does not mean that these business owners do not appreciate the value of their brands and intellectual property. As the above brands illustrate, successful sustainable business models are keen on protecting their intellectual property.

Sustainable Edible Straws...
Edible straws?!... Yes!... That is the goal of one company, LOLIWARE LLC.
Loliware LLC already makes the world's first edible, disposable cup. It's founders are now focusing on addressing the plague of one-time plastic straws that pollute our oceans and landfills and which won't go away for approximately 200 years because they are not, from a practical standpoint, biodegradable.
Enter the LOLISTRAW, an edible straw made of algae that Loliware LLC states will be 100% plastic-free. Currently in development with a crowdfund campaign on INDIEGOGO, this envisioned edible straw is one of several alternatives that can help the world shift away from one-time plastic straws.
Loliware LLC is also perceptive in addressing its intellectual property issues and have registered LOLIWARE for the following goods in the United States (per the USPTO database):
-----
-----
Edible straws will hopefully enter the market as an alternative to one-time plastic straws and offer a better alternative than bioplastic straws which are said to break down into smaller pieces rather than disappear, further threatening wild life, sea life and polluting our oceans and landfills. In the meantime, paper straws have seen a meteoric rise in their use and popularity and are a leading alternative to one-time plastic straws.
Sustainable business models will continue to grow and gain market share. In setting a course for success, Loliware LLC's attention to its intellectual property is a very good example of thoughtful preparation and planning.

#RisingTideSummit: Day Two
Dateline: Thursday, March 29, 2018, San Pedro, Calif. at BROUWERIJ WEST.
![]() |
| nearby Cabrillo Harbor... |
• The Longest Swim - www.thelongestswim.com
French long distance swimmer and eco advocate, Ben Lecomte, to attempt 5,000 mile crossing from Tokyo to San Francisco... swimming 8 hours a day, resting on board support vessel each night, expecting 200 + days off shore... This swim event is being used as a platform to promote ocean protection. During this mission, the team will be investigating ocean pollution, doing radioactive testing, and checking the currents that plastic pollution follows.
• Brand Citizenship, presented by Jim Morairty, 72 AND SUNNY, an advertising agency in offices worldwide. Topics included the rise of brand citizenship - aligning the interests of brand, society and the environment. Examples include PATAGONIA, BEN AND JERRY'S, TOM'S, UNILEVER.
• XPRIZE - featuring Matthew Murlrennan, Director of Ocean Initiative, which has awarded substantial monetary prizes for mobile apps that address ocean preservation, public safety, etc.
• Political Advocacy - featuring Fred Keeley, Dr. David Wilmot of Ocean Champions, and Wendy Wendlandt of TPINNetwork. Per Fred Keeley, "We need to be a proxy for the Ocean because the Ocean can't speak for itself." David Wilmot spoke of his organization's campaign, #VoteTheOcean, and summit attendees got in on the swag, namely, a baseball cap funded in partnership by BILLABONG.
• The "Global Youth Movement To End Plastic Pollution" - featuring Katie Allen with ALGALITA Marine Research Foundation, Long Beach, Calif. Algalita is the non-profit founded by Capt. Charles Moore who discovered the now infamous "Great Pacific Garbage Patch". Among Algalita's program is POPS (plastic ocean pollution solutions). Their panel included three high school students that are active in Algalita programs. Among the comments provided by this youth panel were the following statements: (1) Youth is underestimated in its ability to effect change; (2) More education is needed to effect change; (3) The transition away from plastic is challenging; and (4) Small changes can help the bigger goal.
• Lonely Whale Foundation - led by Dune Ive, Phd, Executive Director. Lonely Whale started the #stopsucking (plastic straws) campaign in Seattle, WA, and this City has since banned plastic straws. x-ref: strawlessocean.org - One (projected) statistic highlighted by Lonely Whale is that 23 Million plus single-use plastic straws have been permanently removed in Seattle. In California, the City of Santa Cruz has banned plastic straws and it was noted that STARBUCKS has replaced its green plastic straws at all of their stores in Santa Cruz with green paper straws made by AARDVARK®, a 100 year old company out of Indiana that has seen a dramatic increase in their business.
• Sports As A Force For Good - a panel led by Sports broadcaster and film maker, Angela Sun, who created the documentary, "Plastic Paradise" (available on Netflix). This panel discussed dealing with and trying to overcome a perceived disconnect between sustainability and sport. One speaker was Reece Pacheco with the World Surf League who spoke of the challenges in instituting sustainable practices within their organization. One positive change has been competitor jerseys are now made out of recycled plastic.

Three Outstanding Sustainable Brands and Trademarks...
The Bad News: Planet Earth is drowning in a sea of plastic pollution!...
![]() |
The Good News: There are many concerned citizens, both individual and corporate, that are making a difference in combating plastic pollution.
Here are Three Outstanding Brands and Trademarks that are making a difference:
1. PARLEY® FOR THE OCEANS®
PARLEY is collaborating with ADIDAS® on a line of footwear and sportswear that are composed of recycled ocean plastic.
www.adidas/us/parley
![]() |
2. RAINFOREST ALLIANCE®
"The Rainforest Alliance is a non-governmental organization working to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior."
https://www.rainforest-alliance.org/
In a recent L.A. Times article on "eco-friendly flowers", the Rainforest Alliance is quoted as stating that there are "more than 1.3 million farms (from 78 nations that) use methods it designed to protect ecosystems, workers and local communities.
3. SURFRIDER FOUNDATION®
"The Surfrider Foundation USA is a U.S. 501 grassroots non-profit environmental organization that works to protect and preserve the world's oceans, waves and beaches."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surfrider_Foundation
One of the Surfrider Foundation's more recent initiatives includes the planning, implementation and registration of a certification mark grading restaurants that are eco-friendly and sustainable, namely, "Ocean Friendly Restaurant" in stylized format (as follows):
![]() |
| (as published by the USPTO) |
note: The application on file at the USPTO includes the following statement: "The certification mark, as used or intended to be used by authorized persons, is intended to certify that the restaurants using this mark meet certain standards relating to environmental conservation and sustainability."
=====
There is an encouraging groundswell of positive action globally and locally to address and remove the negative impact of plastic pollution. The above three referenced companies are very good examples.
Additionally, there is one particular grass roots campaign that is worthy of mention and which started in Costa Rica and which has had a global impact, namely, @5MinuteBeachCleanup.
https://www.facebook.com/5minutebeachcleanup/
Their Instagram account is a testament to this simple mission statement that we each have 5 minutes that we can spare while at the beach to remove plastic pollution. People from all over the world are posting photographs of #beachtrash that they have collected. This is certainly one of the most positive and profound campaigns to combat plastic pollution on planet earth!
